Over 50, Overpriced, Oversight?

Don’t ask me what I was doing reading The Herald (hey, my woman’s away on business - you’d be surprised how many hours I clocked up here in the office in the past few days!)

Anyway, I came across this article on how the over 55s are taking over the world but also paying through the nose for it - this caught my eye:

Then there’s the travel-insurance industry to cater for. The FCO would be better off exposing it. My fighting-fit octogenarian father and his equally sprightly wife are planning a fortnight in Barbados.

Several insurance companies they contacted wouldn’t cover them at all. Saga, the company that supposedly caters for older people who have difficulty finding cover elsewhere, quoted them an eye-watering £1800. After much finger-walking, they accepted a quote of £850. Needless to say, it’ll be their last trip to the Caribbean. No wonder many older people risk travelling abroad without insurance.

How much? Wow, now unless they do have serious medical problems I’m sure they paid way too much! And for Saga to quote them £1800 is incredible! I just got a quote from a specialist senior travel insurer: insureforall -I’m guessing that octogenarian means that they are in their eighties (?) it would have cost them £274.14 (if they were 65-69 it would have been £190.93)

Always search and compare - .. Still, some people still buy travel insurance from their travel agents :-)

£1800 - £274 is an incredible gap! Are you saying it was the same policy?

Hi Roger, thanks for commenting - I didn’t realise anyone was reading yet :-D

No, I’m not saying it was the same policy… it most certainly wasn’t - however, it’s generally the medical cover that’s attractive to the older traveller and I know that insure for all has £10 million on its policy - Insurance isn’t a get-what-you-pay-for industry, that’s for sure!

with cheap plane fares to 100’s of destinations the need for travel insurance has never been more critical and if the elderly are having trouble getting insurance that may well impact on the number of destinations available for breaks away
